Working up a brief on the complex US leaf market at the start of 2015 begins with a couple of assumptions. One is that there was a 20M-lb. surplus of tobacco produced by US farmers in 2014. The other assumption is that no one is sure about the surplus, especially when you calculate yields and factor in the tough weather. Many farmers and manufacturers are beginning the year by trying to sort this out so that they can plan intelligently. To put together this brief, Tobacco International leaf editor Chris Bickers, (who publishes the Tobacco Farmer Newsletter), gathered his photos and notes from the South Carolina AgriBusiness Expo in January, as well as both the Southern Farm Show and the annual meeting of the Tobacco Growers Association of North Carolina (TGANC) in February. The last two events share constituencies and are usually scheduled together. In the end, we think Chris came up with something that helps us ask the right questions-and isn't asking the right questions a gateway to understanding?
