The 2014 tobacco season looms ahead with some growers feeling apprehensive about the way it's been so shrouded with unknowns. In fact, the outgoing president of the Tobacco Growers Association of North Carolina spoke at the organization's annual meeting on February 7 and said that growers must think of themselves as explorers who were entering "uncharted territory" for the first time. But, it is not like facing the unknown is entirely new. Brent Leggett, who grows flue-cured as well as fruits and vegetables near Nashville, North Carolina, pointed out that in 2013, North Carolina tobacco farmers encountered several firsts, experiencing events that had "never happened before in the business of growing and marketing tobacco."
