The 1st November 2009 saw the change of chairmanship of British American Tobacco from Jan du Plessis to Richard Burrows. After five years of service for BAT, South African-born du Plessis stepped down in the light of his own appointment as Chairman of the global Anglo American mining group Rio Tinto. Irish-born Burrows spent much of his career in the alcoholic beverages industries, i.e. Irish Distillers and Paris-based Pernod Ricard, and served as head of various business associations including the Irish Business and Employers Confederation. His last post before joining BAT was Governor of the Bank of Ireland. On his new appointment he said: "I'm delighted to have been given such an exciting opportunity at such a world class company."
