Hong Kong's cigarette industry differs from that of the main- Bland in several key areas. Hong Kong has long had a market-based economy where the consumer is king. Chinese brands sit alongside transnational cigarettes at retail. outlets, and the laws governing the consumption and sale of tobacco products differ somewhat from those of the mainland. However, the Hong Kong tobacco industry shares many of the same problems and concerns as their mainland counterparts, such as smuggling, under-age consumption and so on. To help deal with these issues, the industry has its own association to interface with government entities and society at large. The Tobacco Institute of Hong Kong is funded by tobacco companies such as Philip Morris, BAT, JTI and some cigar companies among others. Former executive director Peter Tarn met with Tobacco International in Hong Kong just before he moved on to discuss the work of the institute.
