Hong Kong's cigarette industry dif-fers from that of the mainland in several key areas. Hong Kong has long had a market-based economy where the consumer is king. Chinese brands sit alongside transnational cigarettes at retail outlets, and the laws governing the consumption and sale of tobacco products differ somewhat from those of the mainland. However, the Hong Kong tobacco industry shares many of the same problems and concerns as their mainland counterparts, such as smuggling, under-age consumptionand so on. To help deal with these issues, the industry has its own association to interface with government entities and society at large The Tobacco Institute of Hong Kong is funded by tobacco companies such as Philip Morris, BAT, JTI and some cigar companies among others. Former executive director Peter Tarn met with Tobacco Asia in Hong Kong just before he moved on to discuss the work of the institute.
