In "The Letter," a song made famous by the Box Tops in the 1960s (and wonderfully performed by Joe Cocker and friends during their Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour of the U.S.), a man asks for a ticket on an "aeroplane" because he "ain't got time to take no fast train." His need to travel at the fastest speed is explained by "The Letter," which is from his girlfriend and says that she cannot live without him any longer. I wonder whether we are capable of this sort of urgent action only in the face of a personal matter involving just one intimate. Does urgency fly out of the window when we are faced with the plight of millions of people unknown to us personally?
