Mobile world Congress didn't result in the expected slew of announcements around Google's Android platform, but smartphones and the battle to get an edge in the critical mobile software market were central to much that took place. rn"The old saying that there is no such thing as free soft- rnware is proving to be true," said Richard Windsor, global technology specialist at Nomura Securities, in a research note at the Barcelona show. "We're increasing [our] investment [in mobile]. We're committed to the space," said Woodman. Also at MWC Microsoft launched its own "app store", Windows Marketplace for Mobile, and introduced Microsoft My Phone, a service that enables users to synchronise their mobile phone with a Web-based service, accessible through Windows Live. rnScreen Digest in a new report says it expects 2009 to be a crucial year for Microsoft's mobile strategy: "Synchronisation and backup services, application store and revamped user interfaces must be made available along with Windows Mobile 6.5 to bear comparison with Android handsets and the iPhone. Windows Mobile 7, expected in 2010, must be Microsoft's big mobile platform push." rnIn 2008, global Windows Mobile handset shipments dropped 11% to 18 million units, while Blackberry sales doubled to 22.5 million and Apple sold over 13 million iPhones in its first full year of commercial sales, says the analyst company.
