Eastern europe has become a key market for mobile growth, benefiting in-region and western operators alike. Russian mobile operators MTS, Vimpelcom and Megafon now rank among the 10 largest operator groups in Europe in terms of connections, says rnWireless Intelligence, with MTS second only to Vodafone. rnSweden's TeliaSonera last month reported mobile subscriber growth of 6.3 million, or 51.6%, in its Eurasian operations in Q4, to 18.4 million. It singled out strengthened market positions in Tajikistan and Georgia, and Uzbekistan where subscriptions grew by 2 million in the quarter. Net sales rose 44.9% in Eurasia to SEK4,219 million (€370 million), it said. Full-year income from Russia rose to SEK5,070 million (€445 million). rnTeliaSonera, which also holds a 43.8% stake in Russia's Megafon, 20.52% of Life in the Ukraine and 37.75% of Kcell in Kazakhstan, is seeing those assets "rapidly outgrow its traditional Nordic markets in terms of connections", says Wireless Intelligence. Subscribers in Spain grew by 543,000 in the whole of 2008, and by 527,000 and 227,000 in Sweden and Finland respectively, says TeliaSonera.
