摘要

Automobile safety comprises five phases: namely, safe driving, accident prevention, accidents avoidance, crash safety and post-crash safety, as illustrated in Fig.1. Automobile safety can be assured only when three factors-people, vehicle and traffic environment-are combined as one, as shown in Fig. 2, to fulfill their respective functions fully. In this framework of integrated safety, the role of automobile manufacturers is to offer the safer vehicles which are designed for overall safety. The role of the vehicle is particularly important with regard to crash safety (discussed in this paper), in assuring, first of all, the integrity of the vehicle body itself and then the vehicle restraint system comprised of seat belts, air bags and so on, to jointly protect occupants. Problems in pursuing the improvement of crash safety are summarized below.
