Engineering controllers such as fabric filters, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), and cyclones are used to remove particulate in flue gas waste streams. Such controllers are prevalently used at coal-fired power plants but are also utilized by nuclear material processing facilities. From a nuclear forensics role there is a desire to gage whether certain engineering controllers are biased towards removing certain elemental and radionuclide signatures. Similarly, there is a desire to view whether any elements found in coal fly ash act as analogs to the actinides. A coal fired steam generation plant was used as a surrogate to a nuclear processing facility. Information on engineering controllers' impact on the flue gas stream could be critical in analyzing air samples from a suspect illicit nuclear facility.
