The author is to be congratulated on presenting a clear and concise review of aluminum structural design, the tradeoffs and unique considerations of this material, and many of the lessons learned in the past. With continued interest in aluminum for passenger and military applications, there is increasing demand for improved engineering analysis for aluminum structures. The author's expertise and previous experience with such structures makes this paper a valuable reference for those more recently acquainted with aluminum as a material for vessel construction. The inclusion of the point made by Boykin and Sellers that aluminum "is not just a substitute for steel; it is an entirely different material" is an especially important observation to keep in mind when designing vessels in aluminum.
