From 1 September there were two milestones in the history of the line: the first was a closure of the Gold Coast University Hospital terminal station, and the second the commencement of a new era as the Stage 2 extension to Helensvale was connected to the existing light rail line. To enable all the signalling circuits, power supply circuits, track work and overhead to be connected to the existing networks, a weekend closure of the line from the depot to the existing western terminus was required. Trams only carried passengers to Queen Street, but were required to proceed to the depot to reverse direction. The overhead west of the depot was isolated and a red stop board erected on the westbound track just past the depot junction.
