The state of transport in Newcastle at present leaves much to be desired. There has been much talk but little action regarding any improvements. The most that has been done so far is to remove the railway into the CBD in preparation for a new interchange, but only after 12 months of the line being out of use because of a court case. The NSW Government announced that they would be building light rail to replace the heavy rail corridor from Wickham to Newcastle. Keolis Downer, one bidder to operate it, seems to think that light rail is not a feasible option, saying that Newcastle is not big enough. However, the success of any transport system actually depends on its level of connectivity to places where people need to go and the density of the corridor being served.
