I was born on March 17th 1919 in Norfolk, my father was a wheelwright and although he was kept out of the army to make gun limber wheels he had to serve with the Territorials and sadly died of pneumonia. After initially staying with her parents my mother eventually moved to a house in Norwich Road, Thetford where I lived until I joined the RAMC in November 1939.rnI attended Norwich Road Junior School and then won a junior scholarship to Thetford Grammar School where I achieved a Cambridge School Certificate with credits. In 1935 I left school and joined LNER, initially as a junior clerk at Norwich Thorpe Goods Office and then at various stations throughout the region.
