During a recent visit to Los Angeles, I came across a prime example of what is, in my opinion, the right way to preserve a nation's Maritime Heritage for the benefit of future generations. At a time when our own Ministry of Defence are actively trying to persuade the Royal Navy to decommission Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, which is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and turn over her organisation, maintenance and operating costs to "Private Enterprise", it is indeed gratifying to think that the Americans do at least take the issue of preserving their maritime history seriously enough to provide sufficient resources to achieve this properly.
