Drivers who consider themselves to be law abiding may be pulled over by police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). Number plates obscured by dirt or with incorrect letter and number spacing that can't be read by an ANPR camera may be flagged up as suspect registration and police sent in pursuit. Number plates that have been stolen or cloned by criminals and are used to evade prosecution for motoring offences such as speeding, no insurance and illegal parking, could involve the legal owners in trouble. The AA Motoring Trust believes that both motorists and enforcement agencies need to clearly understand the implications of this technology and tighten-up on their respective practices. ANPR will help to catch illegal vehicles and drivers together at the roadside whereas clamping and the removal of illegal vehicles only takes them out of circulation and does nothing to apprehend the driver/owner who simply buys another cheap vehicle, but innocent motorists could be 'caught' and would need to verify both the vehicle and their authenticity.
