Traffic accidents involving pedestrians havernbecome a major safety problem in most of the developingrncountries like India due to rapid urbanization, increase inrnvehicular growth and lack of adherence to traffic regulationsrnby both drivers and pedestrians. The existing roads designrndoes not provide adequate facilities for pedestrians and hence,rnthere exists a constant conflict between the pedestrians and thernvehicles in sharing the limited space available on a road. Atrnintersections, pedestrian crossing behavior is even morerncomplex since the vehicles have very little response time torncontrol the vehicles, particularly in urban areas. All thesernissues are pointing towards the research work required forrnstudying the road crossing behavior of pedestrians at urbanrnintersections. The main motivation of this study is to investigaternthe changes in pedestrian road crossing behavior of anrnintersection under mixed traffic conditions before and afterrnsignal installation. For this purpose, traffic and pedestrian datarnwere collected froman intersection located inMangalore city.rnDifferent parameters like age, gender, crossing patterns,rncrossing times, waiting times and crossing speeds of pedestrians,rnspeed and types of vehicles and vehicular flows werernextracted from the videos. The study analysis shows thatrnmajority of the pedestrians chooses one-step crossing afterrnsignal installation since they get sufficient gap to cross thernroad during the red phase of the signal provided for vehicles.rnThe waiting times of the pedestrians were increased afterrninstallation of the signal since pedestrians have to wait forrngaps until the vehicles get dissipated during the green phase.rnThe 15th percentile crossing speed of pedestrians for both thernscenarios were lesser than the crossing speed (1.2 m/s) used inrnpedestrian facility design as per Indian Road Congress (IRCrn103). Critical gap of pedestrians has reducedmarginally due tornthe decrease in crossing speeds of pedestrians after installationrnof the signal. A model was developed considering pedestrianrngap size as the dependent variable and pedestrian and trafficrncharacteristics as the independent variables using multiplernlinear regression (MLR) technique. A total of 468 and 333rnaccepted gaps of pedestrians were used for modeling thernbefore and after scenarios, respectively. It was found thatrnpedestrian jaywalking behavior is reduced after installation ofrnthe signal.The study concludes that after signal installation thernfactors such as traffic volume, average speed of vehicles andrnage-group play a predominant role in estimating the pedestrianrngap acceptance. This study will be useful for understandingrnthe complex pedestrian road crossing behavior atrnintersections under mixed traffic conditions. The findings ofrnthis paper have great implications for designing pedestrianrnfacilities and also, for devising traffic management measuresrnfor pedestrian safety.
