In his preface Rich Sherman points out that in "surveying the literature, [he] found lots of great "how-to" books, textbooks, technical dissertations, and ... pretty dry material on a very dynamic, exciting, and virtually endless career... supply chain management" and notes his frustration with the large gap between industry leaders and laggards in spite of the capability of technology and the knowledge of leaders who are faced with transforming corporate culture. The book is predicated upon the notion that people are not unwilling to change or improve their performance or even transform the organization but just do not know why. To this end, Sherman successfully moves beyond more than a "how-to" book to create a "why-to" book.
