Shallow Depth Chemical Grouting for Soil Stabilization

Chemical grouts have been used for soil stabilization for many years and are effective for improving soil density, reducing compressibility and lowering hydraulic conductivity. For this article we will focus on two particular types: Single Component Polyurethane Systems used for permeation grouting and Two Component Polyurethane Systems used for compaction grouting. Both systems are commonly used in shallow sandy/clayey soils to improve soil stability. During summer 2012, Prime Resins, Inc. assembled, Stable Soils, Ocala, Fla., Foundation Professionals, Lake City, Fla., and Ellis and Associates, Jacksonville, Fla., a geotechnical engineering testing lab to participate in two days of field installations and testing with these two systems/techniques with the objective of determining the attributes or deficiencies of each system. All installations were executed matching real world conditions using the same techniques specified on real jobs.
