As you saw with our last issue, American Augers is part of Astec Industries and has a rich history. The story made me reminisce to back when I was with American Augers, working with its founder Leo Barbera. Leo was an innovator in many respects. He increased the capability and capacity of auger boring machines, developed the Bores Head small diameter tunneling system, manufactured the company's first HDD rig (about 200,000 ft lbs) for a major Midwest pipeline contractor and even built a microtunneling system before joining forces with, at that time, Soltau Microtunneling Systems.The company even rebuilt a 19-ftTBM for a Montreal wastewater project.
