Quality inspection of welded tube geometry, as well as shaped extruded tube geometry, as a part of tube and pipe manufacturing, has benefited very little in recent years from the development of new technologies in production and computer science. Most of the tube plants around the world still perform inspection of tube geometry during production as it was done several decades ago. In addition, the geometry of the w.elded seam area is quite difficult to measure, for plants that require accurate results in real time. Tube users demand a much higher quality today than they did only a few years ago, particularly as the use of computers at the design stage becomes more dominant. Dimensional tolerances with which manufacturers have to comply have narrowed down constantly in the last 20 years - especially in precision tubes as well as in shaped tubes production.
