Welding is a process that plays a dominant role in the manufacture of certain types of pipe and tubes. Any process that promises to improve the quality of weld, reduce scrap and automate the welding cycle, must be worthy of closer examination. Meta Technology says this is provided by its Meta Tracker, a vision guidance system developed to automatically track the weld seam. Typically, a system can be fitted to a welding machine in less than a day and such is the productivity enhancements, claims the company, that return on investment is measured in months rather than years. Laser vision systems first appeared on the welding scene in the early eighties. Like many new technologies, expectations were beyond capabilities and disillusionment swiftly followed. In a short time, everyone was turning their backs on vision systems and looking for the next panacea. The proliferation of companies in the vision market collapsed and the hard-core survivors in the industry retrenched into niche markets where they survived because the technology could still be justified as there were simply no alternative solutions.
