The automotive industry is closely allied to the sheet metal industry. Pressings of various forms and dimensions are integral to any vehicle design. From a welding point of view, these component parts have a set of problems unique to the automotive production engineer; automated welding even more so. Tolerances, fit-up and consistency are essential considerations for the manufacturing organisation, from the design engineer, through production, quality and manufacturing. Simultaneous engineering between internal departments, calling on expert opinion from outside, such as welding companies, is important.
