After a short presentation on the Paris Transport Authority (ARTP), this paper describes the evolution of the objectives of the use of the natural and mechanical ventilation system during the last 30 years. According to the different regulations and guidelines used for safety in road and rail tunnels in the world, it shows the methodology used and the difficulties in defining an optimized system for cost and efficiency.
