In February this year the Command Paper ‘Enablingnexcellence: autonomy and accountability for healthcarenworkers, social workers and social care workers’ was pub-nlished by the Government.n1nIt emphasizes the importantnrole of the regulatory bodies in setting standards of training,neducation and competence for health-care workers, whichnhelp to protect the public. It goes on to state that in thencurrent climate of ‘any willing [qualified] provider’ it isnmore important than ever that professional regulation isnenforced. So far so good and I could not agree more. AsnI read on, I began to think that a serious commitment tonregulation for sonographers was finally taking shape.nHowever, my heart sank as I began the next section whichntalked of the expense and the ‘significant costs associatednwith statutory professional regulation’.
