Diagnostic ultrasound has an excellent safety record, withnno evidence to date for harm arising from human exposure.nIt is, however, still the responsibility of the person carryingnout the ultrasound examination to conduct it in a safenmanner. This entails drawing on a good knowledge of thenmachine settings and their effect on potential bio-effects toncontrol the output of the scanner. Most international professionalnultrasound societies regard the giving of guidancenfor the continued safe use of diagnostic ultrasound to be ofnsufficiently great importance to have established their ownnsafety committees, giving them the remit of providingnadvice to the society’s membership on this topic. Whilenmost of these committees have drawn up their own separatenclinical safety statements,1–5 the content of these is, unsurprisingly,ngenerally similar. Few societies, however, havenissued application specific guidelines for the conduct ofnultrasound examinations, and it is only the British MedicalnUltrasound Society (BMUS) that have made detailed recommendationsnabout exposure times.
