AUVSI created the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, or COLREGS, subcommittee under the association's Maritime Advisory Committee in 2013, where many of the industry's key companies are represented. The U.S. Coast Guard has been engaged in obtaining information regarding unmanned maritime systems COLREGS operations. The UMS industry, represented by AUVSI and its COLREGS subcommittee, has sought guidance and has provided input and information in coordination with the Coast Guard and its Navigation Safety Advisory Council - an advisory committee made up of 21 experts from various domains of the maritime community, authorized in 33 U.S. Code 2073 and chartered under the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act.
