The U.S. Navy has revealed plans to equip its GhostSwimmer unmanned underwater vehicle with sense-and-avoid technology as the service considers future utility for a low-visibility platform for stealth intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. According to the Navy's Office of Naval Research, the UUV most recently completed a test program at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek Fort Story in Virginia this past December. The tests were designed to generate information regarding GhostSwimmer's capability in tides, currents, wakes, a variety of weather conditions and general development for future tasks. The GhostSwimmer vehicle, designed by Boston Engineering, forms part of the Chief of Naval Operations' Rapid Innovation Cell Silent Nemo program, which is exploring future employment of biomimetic UUVs. The U.S. Department of Defense is also looking at the wider utility of biomimetic unmanned platforms in airborne and land environments.
