The two most common unmanned underwater vehicles are autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated vehicles. The obvious differentiator between the two platforms is the fact that ROVs have a tether - old-school technology that should be done away with by ROV manufacturers. At least that is the impression. ROV manufacturers are often asked when they are going to start making AUVs. Why not lose the tether and develop more current technology?
