Rutgers University's Scarlet Knight unmanned underwater vehicle, a Slocum glider, swam its way across the Atlantic Ocean last year in a record-breaking feat and has now taken its place in the Smithsonian Institution's Ocean Hall in the Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Rutgers professor Scott Glenn and some of his student teammates were on hand at a ceremony in early December to cut the ribbon on the Scarlet Knight display. Scarlet Knight, named after the school's mascot, made its way from New Jersey to Spain in a leisurely 221 days, a feat recounted in a documentary, "Atlantic Crossing," screened at the exhibit opening. At one point, some of Glenn's team had to intercept the vehicle to scrape barnacles off its hull and add a small bit of weight to help it fight the currents.
