Developments in unmanned ground vehicles are often seen as lagging behind advances in the air domain. However, recent operational experience has given rise to renewed interest in the potential of these robotic machines. The point was made during the Institute of Mechanical Engineers' (IMechE) Unmanned Military Vehicle Conference in Bristol, England, on 7 Dec, 2010. In opening the one-day seminar, conference chairman and Bat-tlespace magazine editor Julian Nettlefold noted that "the application of UGV is vast, labor-saving and indeed life saving." UGVs face certain environmental challenges that unmanned aircraft don't, said Lt. Col. Mark Adams, the assistant team leader at the Defence Equipment and Support Organisation's Special Projects Search and Countermeasures for the U.K. Ministry of Defence, who delivered the keynote address.
