Japan's defense ministry will look into acquiring Northrop Grumman Global Hawks to beef up its surveillance of China and the Korean peninsula, according to press reports. The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper says the ministry will send officers to study how the U.S. military uses and maintains its Global Hawks. The ministry expects to make a decision by the end of fiscal 2015, the last year of a planned military buildup. Japan relies on manned P-3C reconnaissance aircraft for surveillance, but news reports dating back to the fall have indicated it is considering acquiring three Global Hawks after abandoning plans to build high-flying unmanned aircraft domestically.
