Reliable information is crucial on the battlefield and in business. In order to make good decisions, it is essential to be able to access, process and effectively utilize sound data. In defense and increasingly in the civil and commercial sectors, the use of unmanned systems for data collection is fast becoming the norm. Larger unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), such as the Predator and Reaper, currently provide up to 400 hours of video per day. This large data stream is significantly more than analysts can process and analyze in an eight-hour shift. When it comes to UAS, one of the critical challenges is discerning what data is relevant to accomplishing the mission at hand. Information overload isn't limited to analysts synthesizing thousands of hours of UAS full-motion video. It also applies to business and to our everyday lives. Information is everywhere, and deciding what is valuable can be a time consuming process. Just as unmanned systems provide tremendous amounts of data during their missions, the unmanned systems industry has also become saturated with information on the unmanned platforms and payloads themselves. The Internet is cluttered with market research studies, databases and countless news articles presenting differing perspectives on unmanned systems technologies, market trends and predicting the future of the industry. The sheer magnitude of information is overwhelming and makes it difficult to discern what is relevant.
