Supporters tout the potential of unmanned airships. They say their relatively low cost and ability to remain aloft for extended periods make them ideal for a range of military and commercial applications — from surveillance to communications relay and even logistics. They cite continually advancing technology that would benefit the vehicles, whether they fly just above the treetops or at the edge of space. Low cost is definitely a factor. In the surveillance category, for example, unmanned airships cost less than unmanned aircraft and satellites. They do have a unique ability to stay aloft. And advances are being made nearly every day in unmanned airship-related technologies like materials, propulsion and batteries.
