Heliplane LLC, based in Minot, N.D., and Guided Systems Technologies of Stockbridge, Ga., are pioneering a new class of unmanned aircraft: unmanned cargo autogyro gliders. Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the U.S. military has been engaged in counterinsurgency wars in Iraq and Afghanistan where 63 percent of the casualties resulted from improvised explosive devices. The military has spent more than $20 billion on IED countermea-sures since then, ranging from signal jammers to heavy armor plates for logistic cargo trucks. The mine-resistant ambush-protected, or MRAP, vehicles are being fielded in large numbers.
