Aurora Flight Sciences of Manassas, Va., began flight-testing its new Centaur optionally piloted vehicle in mid-July.rnThe Centaur is based on the Diamond 42M general aviation aircraft, which is converted into an unmanned vehicle with Aurora's flight control system in addition to a few airframe rnand power tweaks. Ideally, the conversion would take four hours, says Aurora, and the process can be reversed once the mission is complete. This cuts down on transportation time, because current airspace access restrictions require that most unmanned planes be transported onboard other air or ground vehicles, according to the company.
