The growing demand for unmanned aircraft in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) applications has increased the pressure on electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) payload developers to maximize sensor performance while minimizing size, weight, power and data rates.rnIn general, EO systems are designed for situational awareness; that is, they can see everything that is easy to see. The result has been an almost continuous increase in image quality presented to the analyst. This increase, however, is limited by data-rate bottlenecks between the aircraft and the ground. In addition, the ability to produce actionable data from the imagery presented to the analyst is limited by the sheer volume of data downlinked. (The New York Times reported on 11 Jan., 2010, that 24 years of video data was collected in 2009 alone from UAS in Iraq and Afghanistan. It has been estimated that only 1 percent of that data has even been looked at.)
