USAF Reserve Maj. Jason "Fitz" Kirkpatrick, right, shown here with Capt. Nick Poe, sent this photograph from Afghanistan. He says the pair had just flown into Bagram Air Base through ice, mountains and enemy territory while avoiding other combat aircraft, and "at the moment of the picture, there were no two people on Earth in more violent agreement that the day's mission could be given to a UAS!" As a civilian, Kirkpatrick is the chief of safety for the U.S. Army Program Manager's Office for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, based in Huntsville, Ala., so he's no stranger to unmanned aircraft.
