Australia hosted the world's unmanned systems community last month at the Avalon 2009 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition in Geelong, outside ofrnMelbourne, introducing many indigenous companies to markets inrnAmerica, Europe and Asia.rnAlthough the show produced some unmanned systems news, it started with news of something that isn't going to happen: Australia announced it won't join the U.S. Navy's Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) program, as had been expected.rnShortly before the show began, the government announced that program delays meant BAMS wouldn't enter service until 2015, roughly the same time when Australia plans to buy new manned surveillance aircraft.rn"Introducing such an advanced new aircraft [BAMS] at this time would have caused incredible workforce pressures on the Australian Defence Force, particularly given the requirement to transition the air force's AP-3C Orion fleet to a new manned surveillance aircraft in the same period," said Joel Fitzgibbon, Australia's defense minister. "The Australian government has taken swift action to alleviate these transitional issues by declining the option to continue on with further collaboration with the [U.S.] Navy's developmental program at this time."
