What the Future Holds

"Are you still there?" is a question I get a lot these days. Obviously the answer is "yes," but more on that subject at the end of this column. There are many questions these days about the future of AUVSI and the future of our industry. But let's not confuse "questions" with "concern." The outlook for this organization and this industry are wildly optimistic on all levels. Admittedly, there are many challenges that come with the rapid growth of, and potential for, unmanned systems. These challenges are all positive in my mind and I would sum them up as a broad, global validation of the use and importance of unmanned systems. Globally, regulators, lawmakers and standards development bodies are grappling with how to safely and routinely allow unmanned aircraft into non-segregated airspace. Much progress is being made but certainly not at the pace that the industry would like to see. This issue has been the number one priority of AUVSI's advocacy efforts and I'm optimistic that the growing chorus of voices from new user communities will help escalate the pace of these activities.
