Late last year, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) awarded a £124 million (($240 million) contract to an industry team led by BAE Systems to develop new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology in the form of a demonstrator program dubbed Project Taranis, for the Celtic god of thunder. The announcement brought to a close speculation among observers, which had intensified since BAE Systems' unveiling of several UAV technology programs earlier in the year, as to what shape the next national development would take.
