The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) market has continued to be the most dynamic sector of the aerospace industry and is likely to double over the next five years. Progress on UAVs has been uneven, with the military sector dominating and civil use barely in its infancy. Likewise, regional patterns have been very uneven with the United States still the predominant developer and user of UAV technology with Europe a distant second. American UAV employment has been focused until recently on the upper end of the UAV spectrum with the use of endurance UAVs, such as the Northrop Grumman Global Hawk and the General Atomics, Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) Predator. But the past few years has seen a sudden upsurge in the use of mini-UAVs for tactical missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
