The US Navy will rely more on unmanned systems to serve as "force multipliers," according to the recendy released Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) Master Plan. The document, which updates the April 2000 Master Plan, sets forth the services priorities in investing in UUV systems. The document sets out to define four classes of UUVs that are categorized by size and application. Man Portable Vehicles are generally less than 100 lbs and are designed to be launched from surface craft and small boats. Two people can usually lift one of these UUVs. These vehicles are used for missions of relative short duration (10 to 20 hours) and are often expendable. They provide the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), mine location and neutralization, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and communications relay missions.
