The scene, at a glance, wasn't that unusual. A group of vehicles of all shapes and configurations were gathered in the Mojave Desert, preparing to embark on a daylong race. There were modified sport utility vehicles, trucks, vans and some specially-built for the desert terrain. They had pit crews, catchy names and loads of corporate sponsor logos. It appeared to be just another off-road race in the Southwest. That was until the vehicles started the course and cruised by the grandstand. Then it became overly apparent that nobody was onboard any of them. That's when the realization occurred: robots are going mainstream.
