The AAI/IAI Pioneer Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system was acquired in the late 1980s by the U.S. Navy. It first achieved prominence as a ship deployed UAV from the Navy's batdeships. Its mission was reconnaissance and performed a role much like the manned seaplane that was deployed from the battleship in the World War Ⅱ era. In 1990 the system received more notoriety when it was deployed simultaneously by the Army, the Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps during Operation Desert Storm. Throughout the last two decades diere has been a continuous stream of trained operators and maintainers to handle Pioneer deployments. The Navy's Pioneer "Schoolhouse" is currendy located at Out Lying Field (OLF) Choctaw, near NAS Pensacola, FL. From the early days to the present — the system is once again being deployed with the USMC — the training objectives have not changed substantially. The units include Mission Commanders, External Pilots (EP), Internal Operators and Mechanical and Technical maintenance support. Some of the adjustments over time have been the combination of the Internal Pilot and the Payload Operator duties as the Ground Control System Operator (GCSO). Mission Commanders at one time attended the same length of course as the longer Internal Operator course, but it was modified so that this now includes only a few weeks of training.
