Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) originated as less-costly alternatives to manned aircraft in intelligence-gathering roles. Even though combat UAVs are now being developed, the great majority of unmanned aircraft for many years to come will be intelligence-gathering types. UAVs, of course, collect this intelligence via their sensor suite and as the requirements of these machines have grown so concommitandy have the capabilities of their sensors. UAV sensor costs have escalated. Since the sensor payload is such a crucial part of surveillance/reconnaissance UAVs, they account for a large fraction of UAV costs. For example, sensors are responsible for about one-quarter of the cost of the Northrop Grumman Global Hawk, and almost one half of that of the General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. Predator. Where possible, cheaper commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology is used.
