A decade has passed since the collaboration between a meteorologist and an aeronautical engineer conceived of the Aerosonde as a small UAV for environmental reconnaissance. During that time the Aerosonde has advanced from a bare concept to a fully operational system with missions around the globe. It is now moving into more general reconnaissance and surveillance activities. Weighing in at 30lb and with a wingspan of 10ft, the Mark 3 Aerosonde is powered by a 24cc fuel injected engine specially developed for the aircraft. Navigation is by GPS and the aircraft communicates via UHF radio or the Iridium Low Earth Orbiting Satellite system.
