摘要

Amid the rubble of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, firefighters and rescue personnel endangered their own lives attempting to find survivors and, as the weeks wore on, human remains. In places where the wreckage was too unstable, rescuers turned to the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR), which sent unmanned robots equipped with cameras and infrared sensors through the rubble, the first time that robots have been used in an urban search and rescue mission. While the robots found no survivors, they did discover several bodies. But what if a robot had found a living human being, trapped in the collapsed structure and far from aid? What if a robot could do more than just identify a victims location? At iRobot Corporation in Somerville, MA, researchers are developing a robot called Bloodhound that can not only find a victim but also administer first aid.
