Situated on a huge plot of land in East Austin, International Sematech is flanked by major players in the world of semiconductors. Its location seems to symbolize its centrality in the industry, as well as its international thrust. From the high, corner office of the research consortium's president and CEO, Mark Melliar-Smith, I can see Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD's) vast chip fab on one side and Tokyo Electron's local equipment-manufacturing installation on the other— an American delegate to the left, a Japanese delegate to the right—representing the two main semiconductor sectors.
