Afew years ago, when Alan Austin was managing partner at a Silicon Valley law firm, he wanted to get away for a ski weekend at Squaw Valley, Calif. And get away he did: He was stranded for two days in blizzardlike conditions. Austin, now a general partner and chief operating officer at Accel Partners, recalls, "It was one of those mid-December days with raw conditions. It was snowing at the top of the mountain. My companions were tired, so they headed back. But I had something left in me, so I went out for one last run. Well, it turned into a whiteout.
